Driving in Scotland

Once you understand the trick... there is really not that much to it.
The trick my friends is to spend the first day screaming and crying... basically your mental mantra should be 'turn towards your doom'.

Round abouts, you turn LEFT onto. Left is your new Right... Lights? Who needs stinking lights.. we'll just put a round about here... oh and laybys. Picture a single lane road, two way traffic and a 60 mph speed limit. There are unwritten rules about who yields the lane... which the Avis counter doesn't tell you a thing about.

Towards the end our our adventure I got better at it. I'm pretty sure I'm now ready for a rally race.. next year I'm doing that desert one...

The end of short winter days - don't let the door hit you on the way out.

There is a wonderful party every year up in Nederland - This year I went and partied like a rock star at 'The Frozen Dead Guy' Festival. It was snowing and muddy. Imagine Logan's fun, and the poor sad cries from my Outback as Logan jumped inback.

It was a good day today

Today I spent the day learning how to be an adoption liaison at the humane society I frequent.
I met some really nice people, and some awesome dogs.

I was however surprised by how many folks thought that 'a fenced backyard' was all the exercise that a dog needed.

buckle in my friends... I'm about to drag you along an educational journey....


1. A backyard is nice.. but it is 100% NOT enough for your dog.

If you couldn't give a rats ass about the quality of life your dog has... Oh your backyard is plenty. In fact.. it's tooooo much. Leave the dog at the shelter, cause all the good life you have in store for it is just too much and he can't take it.

2. Walks are too much work.

Sure I know he doesn't walk well on a leash. Living in your backyard, seeing NOTHING other than a fence, some squirrels a bird and his own poop will surely cure him of pulling on the leash - no work involved. If it doesn't work - just leave him out there - he's sure to come around.

3. You want your dog to be comfortable everywhere? By all means - leave him in the yard, then drag him along to a place he's never seen before surrounded by people he's never met. That'll work.

So my frustration shows. I started off with Logan, and was quickly shown that a bored dog is NOT ok. He's a smart boy, and needed stimulation - all the obedience and agility that money could buy. If you want to take a dog everywhere - you must start by taking him places with YOU. The yard is not enough. The once a week meeting with new people is not going to work, it can't be once a week. It must be far more frequent. I firmly believe that a dog needs about 2x as much excercise as the average person thinks. Puppies can't be left alone for 8 hours while mommy works. Puppy day care is awesome - and helps - but that pup still needs to walk on a leash everyday, no matter how tired mom/dad is. It allows them the chance to bond - to see new things and be comforted, supported by their 'owners'. To explore and bloom.

Dogs are work boys and girls. Nothing wrong with you if you acknowledge beforehand that you simply don't have the time or energy for a puppy. There are many older 'made' dogs that could use a soft couch to sleep on. They may not be able to go 8 hours without being let out. Damn sure they can go longer than a pup. Will you have them as long? It's a toss up. You may be overwhelmed with a puppy.... have to give it up because in good faith you acknowledge that you are swamped. An older dog may not have the years left in them to match a puppy, but they may have a good few years. You and it will be the better for those fewer years.

He's just so damn proud...

BUT I can't tell you cause the parties involved are still alive and will come back and kick my butt!

The wind is crazy today - starting fires and moving the furniture around on the deck.

Keep your fingers crossed - lots of horses up that way - people are just frantic.
